From Alvarez de Toledo, Señorío de la Antigua Finca Cabanela 2015 Mencía is a great value, single-vineyard Spanish red under $15 from the Castilla Y León wine region. Earthy with dark fruity aromas on the nose, this medium-bodied red is vibrant with dark plum, blackberry, blueberry flavours finishing spicy and so fresh on the palate. Drink or hold. Pour with charcuterie, sheep cheese and grilled meats.

Mencía food pairings: roast pork, turkey, veal Porterhouse.

Reviews and Ratings

Trent Mayers rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This grape from Bierzo region in Spain is not exactly the best known in the wine world, but it is worth getting to know. It has interesting developing flavours of dried red cherry, red plum, black cherry, oregano, pepper, spice and vanilla. The tannins are starting to settle down (it is a 2015) and it’s excellent served with BBQ chicken, grilled eggplant drizzled with good olive oil, or smoked beef (and combinations of those).

Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

The Senorio de la Antigua 2015 offers delicious aromas of blueberry, sour cherry, potpourri, cured meat, graphite and vanilla. Made from Mencia - a well know grape variety primarily found in the northwestern part of Spain - this medium-bodied wine shows polished tannins, supple acidity and a dry finish. On the palate, flavors of pomegranate, blueberry, dried herbs, leather, graphite and oak. Great wine to pair with cheese or red meat with peppercorn sauce. Enjoy.
