Malcolm Lamont - WSET Adv, CSW rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: Purple hues on this 18 month old, with aromas of red fruit, herbal notes, a smoky characteristic. Lovely repeated flavours on the palate, and a wonderful wine at this price point! Winemaker Francisco Baettig has a success with this one! Tasted September 26, 2013
Courtney Flood rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review: Pinot Noir is a challenging grape for any winemaker, and winemaker Francisco Baettig took that challenge head-on. Hiring a Burgundian winemaker in 2010 to help him make am impressive cool-climate varietal in a warm country, Francisco implemented many new techniques to create his Pinot. Growing near the coast and at higher altitudes meant cooler temperatures; harvesting 1 month earlier to retain acidity; plucking interior leaves of vines to promote air circulation, while leaving exterior leaves to shade from intense sun; and light oaking in mostly used-oak to keep fruit character. This wine is a fantastic deal for the price! Clear deep red; a lot of colour for a pinot. Very bright aroma of red cherry and raspberry, but some sweet red licorice. Very slight oakiness. Long cherry finish. A touch of smoke and green herb adds some character. Great pizza wine.
Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 87/100 with the following review: They call it the "heartbreak grape" and winemaker Francisco Baettig confirmed the challenges of this grape. In the past Pinot Noir was not planted in the correct locations in Chile. Planting in cooler regions closer to the ocean and higher altitudes meant more success with Pinot! Francisco's Pinot is light in colour and body. Not overly complex. Notes of candied fruit, cherry, earthiness, barnyard and herbs. Some oak on the finish with alcohol. Good value at $12.95
Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review: Lovely Pinot with classic notes of rich berries noting as well the earthy, woodsy notes. Nice finish and great value.
Tom Vigeant reviewed this wine as follows: Pale ruby colour, cherry pit, spice and red berries on the nose. Fairly light bodied with supple tannins. Fruit forward with a very light touch of oak and some bright acidity, a classic style which is refreshingly atypical of most New World pinots. Notes of red berries and black pepper linger in a medium to long finish. Not overly complex but clean and well balanced. Great value!
The grapes were picked in March and transported to the cellar in small 14-kg boxes. They were then destemmed, crushed, and deposited into stainless steel tanks where they underwent a 6º–8ºC (43º–46ºF) cold soak for 5 to 6 days to increase fruit intensity. Alcoholic fermentation took place at 26º–28ºC (79º–82ºF) followed by a post-fermentation maceration for approximately 20 days. A small percentage of the wine was fermented with native years to increase complexity in the final blend. The wine was aged for 8 months in French oak barrels.
